This Substack is taking an interesting turn. Much to my surprise, my more substantial, thoughtful pieces are doing better than anything else. And I'm not sure why. I have some theories, of course. One is that we are so awash in trivial content all day long that there is a real hunger for something deeper. Two, is that whenever you are writing to the deepest part of yourself you are, necessarily, writing to the deepest part of everyone. We are none of us very different. No matter what the people in the selling stars to Sneeches business would have you believe.
I found you from being a Podiobooks.com listener and I followed you over to your blog because you were witty and great at narrating your own stuff in an engaging genuine voice. Half the time I wasn’t super interested in the topic but I knew you’d make it interesting. You have a distinctly entertaining and smart way with words. Fiction, non-fiction. You’re a guy who can write well and your delivery is top notch. Anyways, that’s why I listen to your stuff. Hope it’s encouraging.
That story about the ducks made me think of when in the Lucky Luke comics some guy was made to dance on the spot by having one or more guns fired at the ground near his feet. All fun and games in a comic for kids, but whenever that activity was shown in a movie, the desperation in the 'dancer' would be palpable.
